Veterans Park

In Picture posts on June 25, 2009 at 10:15 am

Most of my photo excursions always seem to begin or end at Veterans Park here in Northeast Ohio. I’m not sure if it’s the park’s proximity or how unique the park is with it’s ever changing scenery and wildlife.

Veterans Park protects the largest inland pond in Lake county and is a remnant of original Ohio swamp forest. The park offers four accessible fishing piers, a 1.78-mile loop trail though native wetlands with 830 feet of boardwalk, and a wetland/wildlife viewing area. Granger Pond is generally stocked with catfish, bass, bluegill and rainbow trout. The property was purchased from The Granger Family by the City of Mentor in 1970 and was Mentor’s first neighborhood park. (Courtesy Lake Metroparks)

Paine Falls and Indian Point

In Picture posts on June 24, 2009 at 9:41 am

I recently had the opportunity to head out to the eastern part of Lake County and visit a few of my favorite parks out there for hiking and taking a few photos, Paine Falls and Indian Point. The parks are relatively close to each other, within a couple of miles, and are far enough off the beaten path that you really get that feeling of “solitude” while you’re out there.

Colonel Hendrick Paine, nephew of Edward Paine, founder of Painesville, moved his family from Parkman, Ohio, in 1818 to this little valley. It became known as “Paine’s Hollow.” Paine built a log cabin on the terrace on the north side of the valley. With the planning and financial help of his son’s (Elazer A. Paine) father-in-law, Samuel Phelps, Paine carried out the industrial development of Paine’s Hollow. He first built a sawmill.

In the years that followed, many other industries came to the Hollow. By 1840, valley businesses included an iron forge and furnace, a tannery, a shoemaker, a blacksmith shop, and a wagon maker. An ashery was built to produce lye for soap and potash production. The area also included several houses and a school for local children.

By 1850, surrounding forests had been felled and prosperity began to decline. With the lumber supply gone and new technological advances, water power was no longer needed. The area fell to ruin and many of the settlers moved to neighboring cities. In 1974, the area was named Paine Falls at which time it was dedicated as a park by Lake Metroparks. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service, Indian Point has one of the earliest architectural works in this part of Ohio. A tribe from the Whittlesey Culture lived here; a Whittlesey structure was built on the 100-foot ridge between Paine Creek and the Grand River. Two parallel mounds of their earthworks can be seen. The Whittelsey were an early people who lived from 900 AD to 1650 AD in stockade villages on high bluffs overlooking rivers and lakes. Because they had no contact with Europeans, the name of their tribe is unknown. The culture is named after the archaeologist who discovered the tribe.

Charles Lyman bought several acres at the Point in 1901. He had camped here often. In the years before World War I, he used the area as a military camp for high school boys. More than 150 youngsters attended Lyman’s Camp Wissolohican during its seven-year period of existence. Lyman began carving the names of campers into a Totem Stone, which can be seen along the trail near the point. Later, the point became a Finnish camp, Kaleva Lodge. During this time, a stone hut was built and used as a sauna, intact until the 1970s, when the park system dismantled it. The property was purchased from John Phelps in 1964. A plaque was erected here, in honor of James and Edna Phelps, his parents. (In 1802, part of the property had been deeded to his ancestors by the Connecticut Land Company.)(Courtesy of Lake Metroparks website)

Fairport Harbor and the Lighthouses

In Picture posts on June 23, 2009 at 10:41 am

Some of my favorite images from in and around Northeast Ohio are from Fairport Harbor.

Fairport Harbor is home to two lighthouses: the Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Light in Painesville Township, operated by the United States Coast Guard and the Grand River (Fairport Harbor) Light operated by the Fairport Harbor Historical Society.

Fairport Harbor is also a popular destination for seasonal activities. Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park, operated by Lake Metroparks features a beach, playgrounds and picnic areas. Nearly a dozen protected marinas and launch facilities provide ample opportunity for boating and fishing.

If you’re ever up this way looking for some great photo opportunities I highly recommend a trip to Fairport Harbor. The two lighthouses offer some great chances for photos at virtually anytime of day and the beach is very nice as well with play areas for the kids and relatively shallow water extending a good ways into the lake.

Sports and the Business Catchphrase

In Picture posts on June 22, 2009 at 9:35 am

I’ve always had an appreciation for relationships and how diverse things can often come together to provide an unified theme. Northeast Ohio provides a lot of opportunities for a wide range of photos that can be used to express concepts and themes. Today’s post takes a look at how a sport in this case football ties into some business themes and popular catchphrases with some images I’ve taken locally.

First off we have “Opportunity” and the warning “Don’t get caught on the sidelines.”Don't get stuck on the bench photo

The image of an empty bench on the sidelines of a football field conveys the notion that you’re the only one that won’t be participating if you miss this opportunity.

Next we have, “Do You Know Your Audience?” and an image of empty bleacher seats.

Empty Seats photo

With the implication that this could be result of not knowing one’s audience or market.

And finally, at least for this post we “Goals”and an image of an nearly impossible shot,

Nearly Impossible Shot photo

Reminding us that while goals are nice to have, short term more realistic goals might be more to our advantage.

Summer means Outdoor Fun !!!

In Picture posts on June 20, 2009 at 12:05 pm

You know summer is officially here when the neighbors around the corner have their annual “Summer Solstice” party. It also kicks off the season (albeit a seemingly shorter one every year here in Northeast Ohio)  for outdoor fun. Long hot days hiking through the woods or playing at the park,  water fights and running through sprinklers and getting blasted by the hose before even being allowed to set foot in the house. I miss the simplicity of my youth :) But I digress, summer is also the time I manage to get out and really get my favorite photos from the local city and metroparks that we are quite fortunate to have here in Lake County and the surrounding area. So with this in mind today’s post is dedicated to Summer Outdoor Fun.

Brandywine Falls

In Picture posts on June 19, 2009 at 9:25 am

On a recent trip to Holden Arboretum there were some photos on display at the visitor’s center from the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park system is a huge park area cutting a swath through some of Northern Ohio’s most beautiful scenery. Some of the photos on display were of Brandywine Falls and I commited myself to visiting on the spot.

Unfortunately I chose to go on a day when a I had limited time due to other commitments and did not get nearly as many photos as I’d hoped for. None the less, I still wanted to post a few up here…

When you first get to the falls there is a nice boardwalk trail leading to a falls over look.
Forest Boardwalk photo

Following this boardwalk, the trail diverges with one of the walks leading down for a direct view of the falls,
Glimpse of the Falls photoFull View of the Falls photo

while the other trail leads up to the top of the falls for a nice view to the bottom,View from the Top photo

There are additional trails rated from moderate to difficult running along the lower portion of the falls and along the river and this where I regret not having more time to explore. The hike through the gorge was beautiful,

but time was limited and I needed to head back up north. I enjoyed my limited time at Brandywine Falls and will make every effort to return.

Landscape and Nature Photos

In Picture posts on June 18, 2009 at 8:31 am

It’s been raining and cool these past couple days, not really conducive for getting out and about  for photos. (At least it’s not for me, I hate this type of weather.) I think I’m in need a “pick me up” so I’ve decided to post a few landscape and nature photos from recent trips to a few local parks.

Flowers, Lighthouses and Sunsets

In Picture posts on June 17, 2009 at 8:36 am

If I were asked to give advice to someone just getting into sellling photos, I ‘d offer these three words, Flowers, Lighthouses and Sunsets. It doesn’t seem to matter where I post these types of photos, they always seem to be amongst the top draws of the portfolio. I’d also stongly recommend a polarizing filter, but that for another post. So without further adieu, I present a few Flowers, Lighthouses and Sunsets…

Symbolic Images

In Picture posts on June 16, 2009 at 9:15 am

One of the things I’ve always enjoyed about photography is the symbolic nature of an image.  Generally speaking there aren’t any words describing what the photographer was trying to convey, occassionally there’ll be an image title and then just the image with it being up to the viewer to see “it”  and possibly add their own interpretation.

Along these lines I’m posting a few of the more  symbolic images I’ve acquired with the Canon EOS 40D this spring…

Fragile World

In Picture posts on June 14, 2009 at 10:10 am

There used to be a cable show called “Man, Moment, and Machine” that looked at how a given technology at a certain point in time impacted that moment.

I’ve noticed a lot of the photos I take seem to follow that theme. A guy with a camera at a given moment capturing an image that might go unseen or be completely different in an hour, a day, or week.

Given the state of the world and the economy I’d like to present  an image I call “Fragile World” taken with my Canon EOS 40D one evening to reflect our fragile state and hopefully lend appreciation to the moments that make up our days.

Water Colors by Canon

In Picture posts on June 13, 2009 at 11:47 am

The weather hasn’t been all that nice this past week so I really didn’t get to take my camera out to the Parks much. Instead I took the Canon EOS 40D to the sink, grabbed a blue plastic plate and had some fun taking photos of water drops…

Yellow Droplet photoGreen Droplet photoBlue Droplet photoViolet Droplet photoRed Droplet photo

Once I got what I thought was by best one I applied a bunch of different hues as you can see above.

After that I got a little greedy and wanted to see what else my Canon could capture around the house…

As you can see, even on a rainy day, a little water, a few props, and a splash of color can lead to some fun photos.

Mascots and Pepe the Free Range Pinata

In Picture posts on June 12, 2009 at 9:15 am

Mascots: those sometime beloved, sometimes creepy characters used for product endorsements to push everything from auto insurance to burgers.

In the beloved catagory I think most would say the Gecko is a relatively benign character, cute but not over the top, non-threatening and quite proper with it’s slightly British accent. Probably the biggest reason for it’s success is the clever word play with company name. Insurance is just another one of those things we pay for. It’s a living expense, but who would you rather get it from, a huge iconic corporate logo where you’re just a number, or a company mascot that’s not above having a little fun with it’s own name. I think in most cases the Gecko wins because oddly enough it humanizes an utterly inhuman product.

On the other end of the spectrum we’ve got the creepy catagory, all I’m gonna say is nightmare inducing big plastic headed King. This non-speaking character is ominous with it’s creepy smile and placed in “stalker” type scenarios that remind one of the Clown for Stephen King’s “It”.  I think this company is searching for another hook as we’re starting to see a variety of different themes in commercials. All I can say is ditch the King and start over. When was the last time you saw your competitior’s clown mascot in a commercial?

Somwhere in the middle there’s a cheeky garden gnome, a cheetah that’s trying to come off as uber hip, and finally my personal entry into the mascot fray: Pepe the Free Range Pinata…

Free Range Pinata photoPinata enjoying the Daisies photoPinata visits the Pond photoPinata visits Fairport Harbor Lighthouse photo

Pepe is colorful, non-threatening, has a politcally correct past, and as you can see from the photos is up for traveling, visiting the park and other historic places. Pepe’s adventures might even find his way into a children’s book series if properly persuaded…

Book 1: Pepe the Free Range Pinata details how Pepe was born free in the Southwest United States and is befriended by Louise who takes him all over the country.

Book 2: Pepe visits the Lighthouse when Louise goes to Ohio to visit her family and learns all about lighthouses.

Book 3: Pepe and Louise visit the Park and learn all about nature and different plants at the park from Ranger Dan.

And so on, and so on…

Wow, all of that to post a few photos :)

Spring means photos!

In Picture posts on June 10, 2009 at 9:33 am

As the weather finally seems to be breaking here in Northeast Ohio and I’ve recently found myself with some unexpected time on my hands,  I’ve decided to set out with camera and take as many photos as I can and submit them to as many stock agencies as I can.

I’ve also decided to update my blog with a post or two. I’m almost exclusively using the Canon EOS 40D these days and I absolutely love the results I’ve been getting. Photos can be viewed here as well here.

Well the camera battery ought to be about done charging so I’ll wrap this up.

New Canon Eos 40D images

In Picture posts on October 7, 2008 at 9:08 pm

Back in August I started getting back into my photography hobby with a nice point and shoot camera, the Olympus SP-560UZ. Having totally enjoyed the experience I recently dove a little deeper into my hobby with the purchase of a new Canon Eos 40D.

It’s been awhile since I posted any thumbs, so I figured I’d sneak a few of my favorite recent shots in tonight. Hope you like them. (Click thumbnails to enlarge.)

It’s been awhile…

In Picture posts on October 2, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Wow,

What happened to July, August, and September?

It seems like I blinked and they were gone.

Even though the time has been flying by I’ve managed to keep up the photography hobby and have actually gone out and purchased a new camera, the Canon EOS 40D.

I haven’t had the time to keep the blog up to date, but I have been able to snap some pretty cool photos with the Cannon which can be viewed here at shutterpoint as well as here at 123RF another stock photo agency.

I’m trying to build up my portfolios at few additional sites as well, dreamstime and fotolio. Once I get a few more photos approved at these sites I’ll start linking them here to the blog.

Trying to find time…

In Picture posts on August 22, 2008 at 5:53 pm

The last two weeks have been an absolute nightmare. Things have gotten so crazy and I’ve found myself with very little time to do anything besides work at the computer.

Needless to say, I haven’t been able to get out and spend any amount of time taking photos with my Olympus SP-560UZ but I hope to remedy that this weekend.

There has been an upside to the debacle that has been the last two weeks, it’s given me some time to find a nice site called Imagekind that will allow folks to purchase greeting cards and various size prints of some of my photos along with frames and matting so they look like “proper” art.

I opted to sign up for the free account to try them out which provides 1 album for 24 photos or 200MB of space depending on the size of your images. So far I’ve only managed to upload a few photos, which can be found here.

Considering the limited amount of time I have today, I think I’ll re-post me previous photo compilation and see if I can actually get out for a few more this evening. (Click thumbnail to enlarge.)

Buying prints

In Picture posts on August 21, 2008 at 8:50 pm

After having some initial success selling some of my images and getting a lot of very positive feedback a friend of mine suggested that I try and sell prints of the images.

I did some some looking around and found a site called Imagekind that allows you to upload your images and sell them as different sized prints from as small as greeting cards all the way up through large wall sized prints depending on the size of the image you upload. There are alot of customization options for price setting and they also provide different buttons and banners to link to your art work. (See below…)

Buy my art at ImageKind.com.

Buy my art at Imagekind!

These are just a few of the options available, unfortunately my free wordpress blog doesn’t support the other “flash” type scrolling banners, but if you have your own website they would make a nice addition.

I signed up for a free account last night and have already managed to pick up a few fans. There seems to be a nice community with a wide variety of different artists and would easily recommend them to anyone looking to get their feet wet selling their prints.

Green Theme Photos…

In Picture posts on August 19, 2008 at 5:05 pm

It seems there’s been a lot of interest lately in all things “green”.  I decided that I would make an effort to take a few “green” themed photos a couple of times a week as part of my regular hobby. The Olympus SP-560UZ makes this pretty easy with a ton of creative shooting options. My efforts to date can be seen below.(Click thumbnails to enlarge.)

These are hopefully the first of many “green” themed photos to appear on this site and if anyone would like to make a suggestion for future green photos I’d be more than happy to give it a “shot”. (Pun intended :) )

Photos I’ve Sold…

In Picture posts on August 19, 2008 at 2:19 pm

The photography hobby is starting to pay dividends as I’ve managed to sell two of the photos I’ve taken with my new Olympus SP-560UZ.

In a previous post I’d indicated a bit of a dilemma between trying to shoot “stock” photos vs. shooting the photos first and considering the audience later. I opted for the shoot first method and it seems, at least for me to have been the route to go.

Here’s the two that I’ve sold (Click thumbnails to enlarge.)

A few other fun facts to consider since opening a shutterpoint account…

Since I opened the the account on July 24th of this year I have uploaded 51 images which have received 1600 views with the most viewed being clicked 70 times.

The two photos above have been viewed 34 and 45 times respectively.

It’s been a lot of fun seeing how many times my photos have been viewed and while getting ratings feedback and ideas on how to improve. I have no issues recommending Shutterpoint and their service to anyone. Sell your photos online

Random photo from this weekend…

In Picture posts on August 18, 2008 at 8:18 am

Just as things were finally starting to settle back down, life got crazy again and truth be told I really only had the opportunity to snap 3 or 4 pictures with the Olympus SP-560UZ. My best shot from this weekend is posted below.

I was on my way home from the gas station when I saw this flash of yellow breaking up an otherwise grey/white scene. Upon further inspection I saw the sunflowers peeping over the top of the privacy fence of a used car lot and grabbed the camera.

Sold my first photo !!!

In Picture posts on August 14, 2008 at 5:40 pm

After the last couple of days of looking at stock photos and realizing that I really wasn’t taking a lot of that type of photo, imagine my surprise today when I checked my account and realized that I’d sold my first image. (Click thumbnail to enlarge.)

The above photo that sold today was shot at Veteran’s Park the morning after a storm blew threw. I thought I might get lucky and capture a few cool pictures. Things were pretty hectic at the time and just getting out to the park and taking pictures provided a fair bit of relief.

This photo on the other hand is an actual attempt at a stock photo and was the more difficult of the two to acquire. Took about 20 trial and error shots to get the end result. (Click thumbnail to enlarge.)

I think I’ve decided to follow the shoot first and consider the audience later approach as it would seem that I can actually sell this type of photo and enjoy taking them far more.

That’s about all I really have time for today. If you like any of the photos you see on this site please feel free to visit my albums over at Shutterpoint and comments are welcome here on the blog.

Smhphotos Stock Photo Compilation

In Picture posts on August 12, 2008 at 4:13 pm

I’ve had the new Olympus SP-560UZ for about 3 weeks now and by last count have snapped around 1200 photos with it.

After getting to know the camera a bit I realized I really liked some of the photos I’d taken and decided to spend a few bucks and sign up with the micro stock photography service Shutterpoint. I liked that I not only get space to upload photos, there is also an active community that provides ratings and feedback on your pictures.  Who knows, maybe if I get lucky I’ll actually sell a few and that leads me to tonight’s post.

I’ve decided to try a “compilation” post with all the photos I’ve submitted so far and see what if any feedback I get. Hope you enjoy as much as I enjoyed taking them. (Click thumbnails to enlarge.)

Veteran’s Park early morning…

In Picture posts on August 8, 2008 at 12:21 pm

Snuck out early this morning with the Olympus SP-560UZ to Veteran’s Park just after sunrise, before the day started to get too crazy. It was a windy, slightly chilly morning after a storm the night before. The combination of wind, sun, clouds, and the park made for some nice pictures. Hope you enjoy. (Click thumbnails to enlarge.)

A few quick shots…

In Picture posts on August 7, 2008 at 10:26 am

Had the opportunity to sneak in a few quick photos with the Olympus SP-560UZ over the last couple of days despite the hectic schedule. Have a little down time this morning so I figured I’d update my photoblog. The following are a combination of creative and still life photos quickly captured on a sunny afternoon. Hope you enjoy. Weekend Wrap Up…

In Picture posts on August 3, 2008 at 3:52 pm

It’s been about 2 weeks since I acquired the Olympus SP-560UZ digital camera and with the next couple of weeks looking hectic at best it seemed like a good time to for a “summary” post.

In regards to the camera, I’ve enjoyed all the additional features Olympus has packed into this camera. The 18x optical zoom is outstanding and at 8 Mega Pixels you’re bound to get some pretty amazing shots.  With a 1 GB XD memory card you can save nearly 500 of those shots with a resolution of 3264 x 2448. It took a little time to figure out which scene modes work best with which light, but over all my initial experience has been satisfying.

It may be a week or two before I get a chance to post again so I figured I’d post my eight favorite shots to date as a testament to the quality of the camera and the fun you can have with it. So without further adieu I present my eight favorite photos since starting my hobby, hope you enjoy… (Click thumbnails for larger image.)

That’s about all I really have time for tonight. I hope to sneak a post or two in this week, but it might be the weekend or next week before I get to again. If you like any of the photos you see here please feel free to visit my albums over at Shutterpoint and comments are welcome here on the blog.

Photos at home…

In Picture posts on July 30, 2008 at 10:28 pm

A friend of mine gave me a bit of advice when I told him that I was going take up photography as a hobby.

He said, “If you’re serious about about taking up photography, no matter what, take at least one picture a day.”

As family health issues have kept me close to home this past week, I’m trying to follow his advice and take a few photographs every day around the house to continue familiarizing myself with the new Olympus camera and rediscover my creative side.

So without further adieu I present tonight’s photos… (Click thumbnails to enlarge.)

That’s about all I really have time for tonight. I’ll keep posting additional photos as I become more familiar with the Olympus and attempt to develope a little better skill with different lighting scenarios, objects in motion, and artistic effects, or feel free to visit my albums over at Shutterpoint.

Day Two: Seeing pictures everywhere…

In Picture posts on July 29, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Day two with the new camera and I find myself wanting to carry it with me everywhere.

Additionally, I begin to look at everything in the context of a photograph. Everything from the way the sunlight passes through the trees to create interesting shadows, to the way the summer breeze sways the flowers in the side flower bed, to the waves meeting the shore at sunset after a storm catches my attention and compels me try and capture the image. I dedicate myself, at least for today, to getting to know the Macro and Super Macro features of the Olympus. The resulting images can be seen below…

Hobby takes a hit…

In Picture posts on July 28, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Well,

2 days into my new found hobby a family emergency has brought things to a screeching halt. I’ve not really had any time to acquire new images, but thought I’d take a few of the free moments I have this evening to finish posting the remainder of my photos from day 1 with the new camera.

In all I think ended up snapping around 130 pictures day one while playing with all the different settings, but only kept about half of them based on quality and personal preference. One item of note, I give the Olympus high marks for it’s ease of use and the 25 or so pre-defined picture modes it comes with.  For anyone new to digital cameras, I would recommend playing with all of your shooting modes to find which ones suite your tastes and fill the bill for the moment or subject matter you are trying to capture.

Now then, onto the remaining samples of day 1 photos… (Click thumbnails to enlarge.)

That’s about all I really have time for right now. I’ll try to post some additional photos from day two forward as time permits, or feel free to visit my album over at Shutterpoint.

Getting Started…

In Picture posts on July 26, 2008 at 3:57 pm

Getting started with my photography hobby was pretty easy. I’d spent the last several years working with digital imaging in the health care field and I’d been trained in the technical aspects of digital imaging. After a awhile the whole thing became well, quite “clinical” and the whole “art” of imaging began to escape me. The needs of the company I worked for also began changing and I found myself moving into an IT roll.   I eventually found myself as a Database Administrator monitoring the company’s servers.

As time past I found myself seeking a new hobby. By the time I wittled down the list of things I liked and the list of things I could actually afford, photography found itself at the top of my list.  So after a particularly rough day at work I stopped off at the local consumer electronics store and bought myself a new camera to kick things off.

All of the photographs on this site have been and will be acquired with my newly purchased Olympus       SP-560UZ digital camera. It’s a nicely featured camera (probably more than I’ll ever use) with a nice “heft” to it and a quality feel. It’s optics pack an 18X optical zoom so it doesn’t exactly fit in one pocket, but for the price, features and 8MP picture quality I’ll “suffer” :) with a camera bag.

Now that’s been addressed, off to  a few of the pictures from day one. (click thumbnail for larger image and additional information.)

That’s about all I really have time for right now. I’ll try to post some additional photos from day one forward as time permits, or feel free to visit my album over at Shutterpoint.
